Overfilling a skip bin is one of the most common and avoidable problems on renovation sites. The skip arrives, debris starts going in, and before long the bin is beyond capacity — with more demolition waste still to come. The result is either a second bin hire, additional fees from your provider, or a pickup refusal that stalls the whole project.
A bit of planning before the skip is dropped changes this outcome entirely. Here is what to know before your renovation generates more waste than you expected.
Why Overfilling Happens (And Why It Matters)
Renovation waste is almost always underestimated. What looks like a manageable pile of plasterboard, tiles and timber often fills a bin faster than expected once it is broken up and loaded. Without a clear plan for how waste is generated, sorted and loaded, the bin fills up with air pockets and poorly placed bulky items rather than actual capacity.
Overfilling creates several practical problems:
- Safety risk: material loaded above the bin's fill line can shift or fall during transport, creating hazards for other road users and the driver
- Collection refusal: most skip bin providers will not collect an overfilled bin. The driver assesses the load before pickup, and a bin that is above the fill line stays on site until it is reduced
- Additional costs: overfilling often triggers excess weight charges or requires a second collection trip, both of which add to the total hire cost

Step One: Estimate Your Waste Volume Before You Order

A general guide by renovation type:
- Single room renovation (cosmetic): 2–4 cubic metres
- Kitchen or bathroom strip-out: 4–6 cubic metres
- Multiple room renovation or partial demolition: 6–9 cubic metres
- Major structural work or full interior strip-out: 9–12 cubic metres or more

Load Heavy Materials First, Then Fill Around Them
The order in which you load a skip bin affects how much total waste you can fit within the fill line. The principle is the same as packing a moving truck — heavy, flat, dense materials go in first and form the base, and lighter or irregular items fill around and on top.
For a typical renovation:
- Start with: concrete, bricks, tiles, plasterboard sheets — heavy, flat materials that form a stable base
- Then add: timber, framing, architraves, flooring — longer materials that can be laid flat across the base layer
- Fill gaps with: smaller debris, broken pieces, packaging — irregular materials that pack into the spaces around larger items
- Load last: light bulky items like insulation batts, foam packaging or fabric — compress these into remaining spaces rather than letting them sit on top and inflate the apparent load height
This sequence uses the bin's volume from the bottom up rather than filling unevenly and running out of usable space while material is still piled in the centre.
Know Which Materials Take Up the Most Space
Some renovation materials are deceptively space-hungry. Being aware of which items expand your load fastest helps you manage the bin's fill rate during the project.
Materials that consume bin space quickly:
- Plasterboard: large and flat but hollow — stacking it properly makes a significant difference to how much fits
- Timber framing and flooring: long lengths loaded diagonally or vertically waste significant volume
- Cabinets and furniture: hollow interiors create dead space unless dismantled
- Insulation: light and compressible but expands to fill space if not compressed
- Plastic sheeting and packaging: takes up a large volume relative to its weight
Materials that are dense and pack efficiently:
- Brick and concrete: heavy but compact — load these first and they create a solid base that maximises usable volume above
- Tiles: stack flat and fill the base layer efficiently
